About

So many words, what’s it all about?

Its about bootlegs, silly! Like most Prince fans I enjoy the unofficial recordings just as much as his albums. Over the years I have accumulated a fair number of these. But when reading about them online I became frustrated by reviews that were often two or three lines about shows . Sure, they tell me the recording quality and setlist but often not much more. I wanted more details! So I have taken matters into my own hands and decided to blog about every recording I own.

Why are you doing this?

Because I enjoy listening to these recordings, and I enjoy talking about them.  My hope is I will be listening to some of my recordings that I wouldn’t normally listen to. But more than that I hope to give something back to the Prince community and make some new friends.

Its music, you should be listening to it, not writing about it

I know!! But I live at the end of the world, and growing up there simply wasn’t any other fans to share with. But now I can reach across the world and discuss Prince with many people- and I have a lot of catching up to do, I have 20 years worth of things to say!  So really this blog is a product of my stunted isolation.

What kind of Fan are you?

I am a moderate, if there is such a thing in the world of Prince fans. Obviously I am enough of fan to put a fair amount of time into a blog, but I don’t collect memorabilia or merchandise associated with Prince. Nor do I listen exclusively to his music, I have a wide range of music I listen to, and until recently I would go months without listening to Prince. Of course that has changed now, I listen to a lot of Prince as I write this blog. I would describe myself as a Prince nut, but I’m not nutty.

Is this page going to be regularly updated?

Yes, absolutely. I plan to post weekly about shows. I write about three or four shows in advance, so I can give myself a break and still post weekly. I have no idea how many recordings I have, but I think at this rate it will take me twenty years to blog about them all.

    • Hi Dirk,

thanks for taking the time to comment.
I had exactly the same thought as you in regards to the people of Paris and Bataclan. Yesterday I wrote about the 4dafunk Batacaln 94 show (I have just posted it now), and I intend on listening to both Sabotages Whole Lotta Love 4 Paris, as well as Sabs 96/97 Purple House.

Thanks again, nice to know that someone else is reading apart from my Mum!

    • Hi Dirk,

      Thanks for the message.

Unfortunately I don’t have the Eye Records set of San Francisco 1982 yet, but I have written about the 4DF release of the same show. Sadly its not the full show like the Eye records release, but I still enjoy it.
I have already written it, you’ll see it on Friday when it’s scheduled to publish – I will be at a work party about that time, so hopefully it goes to plan.

      Thanks for your input,
hope you’re having a great week.

      Take care

  4. Hello Hamish,
I came across your site during my search for Prince boots. To say I am a “fan” of Prince, would be a huge understatement. He was the soundtrack of my life from high school onward, and helped shape me during my “coming of age” I own every studio album, b-sides, and 12 in. I was hoping you could help point me in the right direction to get my hands on some high quality recordings. I do have the 1st ave birthday soundboard from 1984 (which I guess is considered the “Holy Grail”), but haven’t been able to find others at this quality level. Any guidance you could give would be greatly appreciated.
    ~Peace

    • Hi Brian,

thanks for taking the time to comment. Sounds like you are the same sort of fan as me.
Well, if you already have the birthday soundboard, then it’s all downhill from there. 😉

As far as sources for shows, it’s always been a struggle with Prince’s tight control of the net. Websites come and go regularly as he shuts them down. I am guessing in the next few months there will be a flood of sites sharing bootlegs. I suggest a little patience then a lot of google should get you everything you need.

  5. I thought I was the biggest Prince fan ever but it seems like now I’ve been finding a lot of people who love Prince almost as much as me.

  6. Hi Hamish, I´ve been, and still I am, a Prince music lover…Damn…I should avoid the word “music” between Prince and Lover, as I found out that I love him, not only as the musician he was, but as the person he was. I´ve been collecting his music since I was 13, that was in 1984…Looong time ago. I found myself re-discovering Prince, cleaning my old vinyls and cds.

We all know he was against many things on internet, perhaps he wont like to find out whats going on now, but for us, the fans, it´s a whole new world to discover…blogs, videos, pictures, music that were hiding in the dark, and I would like to say that it´s more like a garden full of new flowers to smell and feel, they all taste like funk, rock…love…Prince…

    I´m glad I found your page too…

I wish he was still around to make us even more better persons

I just wanted to congratulate you for your page and share the feelings!

    Regards from Spain

    I wish u Heaven!

  7. Hamish, thanks for your input. Prince is happy somewhere knowing that some of us are anyway as much of his music as possible.

    Keep blogging,

    Prince fan, P

    • Hi Roland,

nice to hear from you. Sadly no, I don’t have a son called Elliot, nor have I been to Mallorca.

Thanks for saying hi, and thanks again for reading.

  8. Hi Hamish,
Just found your blog. It’s great!
I can enjoy my collection more with your blog now.
By the way, I can not find new releases such as from 4DF. Could you guide me where I can go?
I heard there’s a new release with Mononeon. I’m very interested in this release and hoping to listen.
    Thanks and take care,

  9. Hello,
I recently came across a song called Drum Machine by Prince featuring Dr. Fink, but I can’t find any history on the song. I did come across a message board where several people said it was not Prince, but a fake or imitation. You seem to know a lot about Prince, so I was wondering if you have any information about the song. Thanks.

  10. Hamish….you rock this! I recently installed a Plex server, which has forced me to go through my collection of horribly mis-labeled Prince bootlegs to find out what the hell I have. Thanks for your great work here and your reviews are really insightful and a joy to read. Keep up the great work!

  11. This is an extremely informative page, especially regarding early Prince. The stones gig has always been infamous and the detailed review gave excellent insight to this historical event, I wish there was video documenting it, maybe deep in the vault somewhere? I was fortunate enough to see Prince in Toronto for 2 Purple Rain shows and again in 1988 for Lovesexy, truly spectacular shows and they rank high on my all time favorite concerts list. Thanks Hamish for the blog and the detailed info on these early performances!
    Cheers,
    Sean

    • Thanks for taking the time to drop by and say hi Sean.
You know, I have spent years trawling through Rolling Stones bootleg sites, hoping that there is some sort of long lost footage of Prince opening for them, sadly to no avail.

I can only imagine how spectacular the shows you witnessed were, he was truly one of a kind and I am thankful that such a volume of music, live and studio, exists for us to enjoy to this day.
